Intercultural service
The main objective of our work is to provide citizens with an international family history, immigrants and refugees with non-discriminatory and equal access to participation in all relevant areas of society. We are a point of contact for citizens with a history of immigration, especially families, e.g. immigrants, refugees, EU citizens, etc.
Tasks
The tasks and fields of activity of the Intercultural Service include
- District and socio-spatial networking work
- Needs assessment, development and management of participation-promoting projects in the city district in cooperation with independent providers, such as intercultural centers of the city of Cologne, migrant organizations, New German Organizations, regular services of the city of Cologne, etc.
- Guidance counseling for the target groups
- Advice and information for district specialists and cooperation partners
Goals
The IKD pursues the goal of representing the interests of the target groups by providing information and advice to independent social work organizations, other social facilities and institutions, intercultural centers of the city of Cologne, regular services, etc., and thereby contributing to the reduction of racist and other forms of discrimination against the target groups in order to enable their participation in all relevant areas of society.
Advice and services in the districts
The Intercultural Service sees itself as a guide in the borough and offers advice for those seeking guidance during regular office hours, in person, by telephone, online, etc.
If necessary, those seeking advice are referred to IKD project services, specialized advice centres, intercultural centers or regular services.

Networking
District and socio-spatial networking work
Close cooperation with local organizations and institutions is useful and necessary for planning and developing needs-oriented and integration-promoting services.
The intercultural services coordinate networking rounds and are well integrated into existing cooperation structures in the districts, such as
- Expert working groups and round tables in the context of immigration and flight
- District and social area conferences
- Networking and coordination meetings in the refugee shelters
- Early help network from the areas of health and family support
- Education in schools network
- District steering groups
